In 2019, the Common Convention voted 438-384 to uphold the church’s ban on ordaining LGBTQ clergy and officiating at or hosting same-sex weddings.
The flood of disaffiliations started after the Common Convention in 2019 permitted Paragraph 2553 of the Book of Discipline, a church legislation that permits UMC church buildings to go away with their church property in the event that they get hold of the approval of two-thirds of their congregation and their regional governing physique.
