Authorities in North Macedonia have arrested 21 folks following clashes between visiting Levski Sofia soccer fans and Shkupi supporters forward of a Europa Convention League qualifying match.
Police mentioned Friday that 19 Bulgarians and two folks from North Macedonia have been detained due to Thursday’s violence, which got here amid uneasy relations between the 2 Balkan neighbors.

North Macedonia’s authorities condemned the violence, which Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski blamed on “hooligans and individuals who don’t have anything to do with sports activities.”

Relations between North Macedonia and Bulgaria have been poor amid disputes over historical past, id and cultural heritage that led to Sofia blocking its neighbor’s European Union accession bid in 2020.
