United Nations condemns ‘summary execution of prisoners of war’ by both Russia, Ukraine

The United Nations called on Russia and Ukraine to deal with prisoners of warfare humanely Tuesday, days after recordings emerged that appeared to indicate navy leaders on each side of the combat calling for the abstract execution of prisoners.

Audio first surfaced on a number of Telegram channels Sunday that appeared to show Ukrainian forces ordering the killing of a Russian prisoner of warfare. 

Yevgeny Prigozhin, who leads the Russian mercenary group Wagner, responded by saying that his forces will kill all rival troopers in Bakhmut, a metropolis in jap Ukraine that has been the middle of combating for months. 

“We’ll kill everyone on the battlefield. Take no extra prisoners of warfare!” Prigozhin stated Sunday in a Telegram message, in accordance with Agence France-Presse.

The authenticity of the recordings are in dispute, the UN famous. 

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine released a report final month that documented 40 abstract executions on each side of the warfare since Russia invaded in February 2022. “In relation to the therapy of Ukrainian prisoners of warfare, we’re additionally deeply involved by the abstract execution of 15 Ukrainian prisoners of warfare shortly after being captured by Russian armed forces. The Wagner Group navy and safety contractors perpetrated 11 of those executions,” Bogner added.
