Baptist College (HKBU) along with WWF-Hong Kong, Ocean Park Hong Kong and College of Manchester stated on Tuesday that the crew collected jellyfish samples from a brackish shrimp pond over 2020-2022 and located they contained a brand new species.

Qiu Jianwen, a professor on the Department of Biology at HKBU, stated though the species is presently solely recognized in Mai Po, the crew believes the species can also be distributed within the adjoining waters of the Pearl River Estuary.

Field jellyfish “are poorly recognized in Chinese language marine waters. Our discovery of Tripedalia maipoensis in Mai Po – a comparatively well-studied space in Hong Kong – highlights the wealthy range of marine life in Hong Kong and even the entire of China,” he stated.
