Padres’ 16-year-old prospect makes minor league debut, doubles in first at-bat

The San Diego Padres have welcomed a 16-year-old into their Minor League system. 

Ethan Salas, who turns 17 on Thursday, was added to the Single-A Lake Elsinore roster on Tuesday and made an instantaneous influence.

The 86th-ranked prospect in Major League Baseball doubled and singled in his first two at-bats, including a stroll and scoring a run for the Storm.

The Padres signed the Venezuelan catcher to a $5.6 million deal in January. 

“He is sort of the total-package catcher,” scouting director Chris Kemp stated after the Padres signed Salas this winter, based on MLB.com.

“It is simply uncommon. That is my ninth yr doing worldwide scouting and, for us, that is essentially the most attention-grabbing man we have scouted.”

Salas is the primary participant to see enjoying time in Single-A in his age-16 season since Julio Urias made his debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Low-A Nice Lakes in 2013, based on Baseball America.

He made his Cactus League debut in opposition to the Chicago White Sox in March, impressing Padres supervisor Bob Melvin. 

“For a 16-year-old child behind the plate, I am going to inform you, he is properly past his years,” Melvin stated. “You watch the way in which he frames pitches — a pair balls within the grime bought by him — however he has his wits about him. … It is fairly unimaginable to see a 16-year-old with that sort of composure.”
